South Sudan, UN: ‘failure to comply with peace agreement could cause return to war’

(Adnkronos) – Failure to comply with the 2018 peace agreement in South Sudan could trigger a “catastrophic” return to war and threaten millions of lives. This was stated by the United Nations commission charged with documenting human rights violations in the country.

“Failure to comply with the protections enshrined in the peace agreement – including freedom of movement, political participation and the cessation of hostilities – will lead to a catastrophic return to war,” the commission wrote in a note, the day after the arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar by forces loyal to his rival, President Salva Kiir.
