South Korea, opposition leader acquitted, path cleared for next presidential elections

26 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition in South Korea, has been acquitted. The Supreme Court of Seoul, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reports, overturned the conviction, with a suspended sentence, which had been imposed on charges of lying when he was a presidential candidate in the 2022 elections.

The ruling paves the way for the candidacy of Lee, leader of the Democratic Party, in the next presidential elections. They could be called soon if the Constitutional Court were to confirm the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, suspended from office after the decision to impose martial law in the country last December, then quickly revoked.
