(Adnkronos) – The chair of Mike Waltz, the National Security Advisor who made the sensational mistake of inserting a journalist in the Signal chat where attack plans in Yemen were posted and discussed, is wobbling. Politico reports this, revealing that furious discussions have been underway at the White House since the sensational revelations of The Atlantic director Jeffrey Goldberg emerged.
Citing a senior administration official, the newspaper reveals a lively exchange of messages between the president’s staff, with “half saying Waltz won’t or shouldn’t survive” this storm. In particular, two senior advisers have put forward the idea of the former Florida congressman resigning, so as not to put the president “in a bad spot.” “It was irresponsible not to check who was in the chat, irresponsible to have that conversation on Signal, you can’t have an irresponsible National Security Advisor,” says one of Politico’s sources.
Even more explicit is another comment: “Everyone at the White House agrees on one thing, Mike Waltz is a fucking idiot.” Despite the tone of these statements, obviously anonymous, Politico’s sources warn that nothing has been decided yet, and it will be Donald Trump who will make the final decision, in a day or two, above all on the basis of the clamor for this embarrassing episode.
Not to mention, the sources always underline, that the embarrassment also involves the other ministers who participated, spoke freely, and in the case of Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, published war plans on an unclassified chat. Trump could take it out on Hegseth for his lightness or on JD Vance who, according to Goldberg, in the chat questions the advisability of attacking Yemen, raising doubts about Trump’s awareness of this.
Playing an important role in the pressure for Waltz’s defenestration are also the suspicions on the part of the America First orthodox towards the former neocon, once an anti-terrorism adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney, an open opponent with Trump’s hated daughter Liz, who only recently, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has converted to Trumpian foreign policy principles.
And on social media, many isolationist commentators wonder mischievously why Waltz had The Atlantic director’s number, suggesting that the Republican actually retained his neocon sympathies.
