(Adnkronos) – A strong earthquake was recorded off the coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The 6.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the past few hours at a depth of 21 kilometers, about 160 kilometers from Riverton, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). No damage has been reported so far, nor has a tsunami warning been issued. The earthquake was felt by thousands of people
Initially a magnitude of 6.8 was indicated, then revised. The authorities have invited the population to stay away from the beaches. In 2011 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated Christchurch, with a death toll of 185.
