(Adnkronos) – Dante Alighieri was “the first great Europeanist, foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote on social media Tuesday – the national day dedicated to Italy’s revered Florentine poet

‘‘Ye were not made to live like brutes, but to follow virtue and knowledge’,” wrote Tajani, quoting Dante.

“This is what is at the basis of our civilisation,” Tajani underlined.

“Let us remember that Dante was the first great Europeanist. Let us always remember him,” Tajani added.

Dante’s exact date of birth is unknown but is believed to be around 1265. He wrote his epic Divine Comedy between 1308 and 1321, shortly before his death that year while a political exile in Ravenna.
