Ukraine: China should take part in any UN peacekeeping mission says Italy

24 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – If China is willing, it should participate in any UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, and the move would be “the right one to guarantee peace and stability in that fraught part of the world,” according to Italy.

“I believe China’s readiness to take part in peacekeeping missions in Ukraine is something to be considered very seriously,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani said at a youth event in Milan on Sunday organised by his conservative Forza Italia party.

“I have always argued that it is necessary to create a buffer zone with the presence of UN peacekeepers,” Tajani went on.

“When I spoke about the UN and the Security Council, I made it clear that China should also be included,” he said.

“So if China wants to move in this direction, I think it is the right one to guarantee peace and stability in that fraught part of the world’.

United States-Russia talks were set to take place in Saudi Arabia on Monday as Washington signalled its hope for “real progress” on a ceasefire in the 37-month-old Ukraine war triggered by Russia’s full-scale military invasion of the former Soviet republic.

Moscow, however, warned that “difficult negotiations” lay ahead.
