Canada, snap elections on April 28 or May 5

20 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – The new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose government was sworn in on March 14, will announce early general elections on Sunday. According to sources quoted by the Canadian broadcaster Ctv News, the dates of April 28 and May 5 are in the balance and a decision will be made shortly. A government source contacted by Afp believes that the vote will be held on April 28.

The decision, if confirmed, would have a number of implications for Canada. Next Monday, in fact, Parliament should resume work following the almost two-month postponement requested by the former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, following the announcement of duties by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. By calling elections on Sunday, Carney will not have to deliver the Speech from the Throne or face the confidence vote of the Municipalities.

Following Trudeau’s resignation and Trump’s threats, the Liberals – of which Carney was elected leader – have seen a surge in the polls. According to the latest Nanos Research poll, released Tuesday, the Conservatives are at 35%, just one point ahead. Trump and his trade war are likely to be at the center of the Canadian vote. The same Nanos Research poll highlights that Trump and relations with the United States are the main issue of national interest with 26.8%, with the economy in second place at 16.7%.
