(Adnkronos) – Al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militants detonated a bomb as the convoy of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud passed, leaving him unharmed. The explosion occurred near the presidential palace in Mogadishu, local media reported. Somali security forces have cordoned off the blast site and al-Shabab claimed the attack on Telegram.

Journalist Mohamed Abukar Dabashe was killed in the attack, the first reporter to be killed in Somalia this year. The Somali Journalists Syndicate strongly condemned the attack.

Mohamud then continued his journey to Middle Shabelle to meet with the military engaged in the fight against al-Shabab, presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein wrote on ‘X’.
