(Adnkronos) – Lethal clashes between Syrian security services and fighters loyal to ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad in which over 1,000 people – mainly civilians – have died in the northwest this past week damage prospects for unity and peace and must cease, Italy said on Thursday.
“We must absolutely avoid civilian casualties, what has happened in recent days must not happen again,” Tajan said at a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Quebec, Canada.
“We are certainly worried about the clashes that have taken place in recent days with too many deaths,” he said.
A visit to Brussels by Syrian foreign ministe Asaad al-Shaibani in the coming days will be an opportunity to learn more, Tajani said.
“We will listen, we will assess, but certainly work must be done in Syria to forge national unity and build a system of guarantees all Syrian citizens, regardless of ethnicity or religion”, he stated.
At meetings held in recent months, Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa had reassured Tajani that this is the goal, he said.
