(Adnkronos) – The Armenian Foreign Ministry has announced that it has finalized the draft peace agreement with Azerbaijan and is ready to discuss the date and place for the signing of the final treaty.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been protagonists of a long conflict, culminating in multiple wars starting in the late 1980s, when the Nagorno-Karabakh region – with an Armenian majority but located within Azerbaijani borders – declared independence from Baku with Armenian support. In September 2023, Azerbaijan recaptured Karabakh with a military operation, forcing almost all 100,000 Armenian residents to flee to Armenia.
Both countries have repeatedly expressed their willingness to sign a peace treaty, but for years they have struggled to find an agreement on the terms of the agreement. “The peace agreement is ready for signature. The Republic of Armenia is ready to start consultations with the Republic of Azerbaijan on the date and place for the signing of the agreement,” the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
