Greenland, center-right wins legislative, nationalists leap forward

12 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – The center-right opposition has won a resounding victory in the legislative elections in Greenland, the Danish territory coveted by US President Donald Trump, while support for the nationalist Naleraq party, in favor of short-term independence, has increased significantly.

The Democratic Party, which describes itself as “social liberal” and aims for independence along a more gradual path, has maintained an insurmountable lead during the vote counting operations, not yet concluded, according to the Greenlandic public broadcaster KNR. The nationalist party Naleraq, the most convinced among the pro-independence parties, is meanwhile heading towards an “amazing” electoral score.

“We respect the outcome of the elections,” outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede, who leads the left-wing green Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, told KNR. And the leader of the Siumut party, IA’s coalition partner, admitted defeat. Since none of the parties are expected to win a majority of the 31 seats in parliament, negotiations will be held in the coming days to form a coalition. The future government is expected to outline a timeline for the path to independence, supported by a large majority of Greenland’s 57,000 inhabitants.
