(Adnkronos) – The “strong ties that unite Italy and Spain” were underlined during ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi’s visit to Aragon’s capital Zaragoza, as well as the autonomous northeastern region’s economic potential, the embassy said in a statement on Tuesday.

The envoy’s meetings with top local officials including Zaragoza’s mayor Natalia Chueca Munzoz centred on Aragon’s “strong economic potential, thanks to the presence of international investors including (Franco-Italian-US car maker) Stellantis,” the statement said.

The statement underlined the Aragon region’s “cultural and religious dynamism in view of the bicentenary of Goya in conjunction with the Holy Year”.

Aragon and the city of Zaragoza are “a strategic territory between Madrid and Barcelona,” said the statement.

The statement underscored “the strong ties that unite Italy and Spain”, which it said were bolstered by Aragon’s 5,000-strong Italian community.

During Monday’s visit, Grimaldi also met the central government’s representative in Aragon Fernando A. Beltran Blazquez, the Aragon regional government’s deputy governor Maraa del Mar Vaquero and Aragon’s parliament speaker Marta Fernandez Martin, said the statement.

The ambassador was accompanied to Zaragoza by Italy’s Consul General in Barcelona, Emanuele Manzitti, the embassy’s First Counsellor for Political Affairs, Marco Lapadura, and Consul Mattia Lupini, the statement noted.
