(Adnkronos) – Everyone wants the Finance Ministry. In view of the formation of the next German federal government, and while possible loosening of the debt brake to finance Defense and future extraordinary expenses for infrastructure are being discussed, among the likely future government partners “the battle is on for the most powerful post after that of Federal Chancellor”, writes Bild, recalling that “the finance minister is so powerful that he can even bring down governments prematurely, as in the case of the liberal Christian Lindner” and the traffic light coalition.
Two names are currently being touted insistently. “The CSU group leader Alexander Dobrindt and the SPD leader Lars Klingbeil”. Both were significantly involved in the exploratory talks between the CDU/CSU and SPD and helped negotiate the ‘XXL’ debt package. Dobrindt is considered a solid expert on federal finances. As former CSU general secretary, former transport minister and CSU group leader, he has held prominent positions in Berlin politics for 16 years. (continued)
Klingbeil participates in the talks with the CDU/CSU in his dual role as SPD party leader and parliamentary group chairman. As an alternative to them, Matthias Middelberg (CDU), deputy parliamentary group leader and budget expert, has been named for the post by the CDU/CSU. The current finance minister, Jörg Kukies (SPD), does not seem to stand much of a chance. However, Bild points out, both the CDU/CSU and the SPD say that no names have been put forward yet.
The next finance minister will likely be authorized to spend more money than ever before. The normal federal budget comprises around 480 billion euros this year (not yet approved). Added to this is – if approved – additional debt for the rearmament of the Bundeswehr (from 50 to 100 billion euros per year) and an extraordinary package for infrastructure.
