(Adnkronos) – Donald Trump warns that “there could be a shutdown” at the end of this week. Responding to reporters’ questions on Air Force One, the president added that “the Democrats want it, they want to destroy the country, I don’t know what to tell you, it could happen, it shouldn’t, and it probably won’t happen”.
The president in fact added that he believes that in the end the resolution to confirm federal spending levels until September, presented last Saturday by the Republican majority, “will eventually pass” before the March 14 deadline. It must be remembered that during Joe Biden’s presidency, Trump repeatedly urged congressional Republicans to resist any attempt at mediation with the Democratic administration over the budget, even at the risk of reaching a shutdown that would be, he said, “the president’s fault”.
The vote on the measure – which contains $13 billion in domestic spending cuts and a $6 billion increase in military spending – is scheduled for tomorrow in the House where Republicans have a narrow 218-214 majority, and therefore can only afford to lose one vote in the face of unified Democratic opposition. In recent days, Trump wrote on X that Republicans must “stay united, without dissent”.
