(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government is continuing to work towards the goal of Syria’s stability, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday after the war-ravaged country’s de facto leader vowed to contain its deadliest violence in years.

“We continue to work for the strategic objective of stability in Syria,” Tajani told daily Corriere della Sera in an interview on Monday.

“The interim president (Ahmed) al-Sharaa has announced an investigation into the recent violence and has made it clear there will be no clemency for those who killed civilians,” Tajani said.

“There have been attacks on his (Sharaa’s) security forces and hundreds of victims of summary executions are reported, ” Tajani stated.

Sharaa vowed on Sunday to hunt down and bring to justice the perpetrators of violent clashes pitting Alawite loyalists of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad against the country’s new Islamist rulers, who seized power late last year ending a devastating civil war and decades of severe repression.

Over 1,000 people, mainly civilians were killed in clashes over the past four days in Assad’s costal heartland of Latakia, according to a war monitoring group.

“We want Syria’s territorial integrity to be preserved, with respect for all the communities that must engage in dialogue and cooperate peacefully,” Tajani underlined.
