(Adnkronos) – Ukraine and the rest of Europe’s safety cannot be guaranteed without Nato and the United States, but the continent must spend more on security, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.
“To me it is utterly impossible to think of guaranteeing the security of Ukraine and Europe without a solid transatlantic relationship, without Nato,” Tajani said on the sidelines of a European People’s Party meeting in Brussels.
“Without the United States it cannot be done – this is crucial,” he said.
But European countries must increase the proportion of GDP that they spend on security – as US president Donald Trump continues to demand – Tajani noted.
“Security is not war. It also means the security of our streets, of our fellow citizens, counter-terrorism, it means the security of our borders. It is a broad meaning and should not be simplified,” he continued.
“Security is something much broader than war,” Tajani concluded.
