(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani has floated the idea of “reconverting” part of the automobile industry under the European Commission’s new 800 billion euro blueprint to rearm Europe.
“We may need to see if some industries in the automobile sector can be reconverted to production for defence,” Tajani said in Brussels on Thursday.
“I think the plan unveiled by (European Commission president) Ursula von der Leyen should be approved. We need to guarantee our security,” Tajani said.
A day after US president Donald Trump on Monday said his administration was stopping military aid for Ukraine, von der Leyen announced the five-part ReArm Europe plan to bolster Europe’s defence industry, boost its military capability and help give urgent military support for Ukraine by giving member states more fiscal leeway for defence investments, 150 billion euros in loans and aiming to raise private capital.
