(Adnkronos) – Goodbye letters, mailboxes and jobs. In Denmark, the postal service, PostNord, has announced that from the end of the year it will no longer guarantee the delivery of letters. An era ends. The Danes are increasingly ‘digital’ and few are left, not only in Denmark, to write a letter, put it in an envelope and post it.
The data published on the PostNord website, which also operates in Sweden, speaks of a drop of over 90% since 2000. From the beginning of June, the historic mailboxes will begin to disappear. About 1,500 of the 4,600 employees in Denmark will lose their jobs, PostNord said, as reported by the BBC, which turns the spotlight on a country where there is an app for almost everything. According to estimates, 95% of Danes use the Digital Post service, but 271,000 people remain fond of paper mail. Until 2026, the reimbursement of stamps already purchased is guaranteed.
The Minister of Transport, Thomas Danielsen, tried to reassure the population. Letters can still be sent and will reach their destination, he said, insisting on the “free market”. The BBC recalls the law that last year opened the market to private companies. Meanwhile, PostNord says it wants to become the preferred parcel delivery company for Danes who are shopping online like never before.
