(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni will attend a summit in London on Sunday of over a dozen European and EU leaders to propel action on Ukraine and strengthen its position including military support and ratcheting up economic pressure on Russia.
Meloni will hold talks with her UK counterpart Keir Starmer at 11 am on Sunday ahead of the leaders’ summit on Ukraine, which kicks off at 2pm, according to a statement from Meloni’s office.
A rift appears to have emerged between Meloni and France’s president Emmanuel Macron over proposals spearheaded by London and Paris to send a European “reassurance force” of 30,000 soldiers or less to protect Ukraine.
Meloni demanded to know who Macron was speaking for when he raised the issue during his talks on Monday in Washington with US president Donald Trump, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported.
Meloni’s right-wing coalition government is mulling the idea of a joining a future Nato peacekeeping force to prevent Russia invading Ukraine again in future.
