(Adnkronos) – Authorities in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand have launched a rescue operation to try to rescue 41 workers trapped under a massive avalanche in the town of Chamoli in the Indian Himalayas. The trapped workers were part of a Border Roads Organisation mission working on roads near the village of Mana when they were hit by the avalanche.
The mission included a total of 57 workers, 16 of whom have been rescued so far and sent to the army camp near Mana in critical condition, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Deepam Seth told Indian broadcaster Ndtv.
Between 60 and 65 people are involved in the rescue operations, said the Indian Army’s Central Command, which assured that rescue efforts will continue throughout the day despite “heavy snowfall and small avalanches continuing to hit the area,” according to a statement released on X.
