(Adnkronos) – Italian soldiers would only be deployed to “buffer zone” as part of a United Nations force to keep a future peace between Russia and former Soviet republic Ukraine, according to foreign minister Antonio Tajani.
“If a neutral zone is to be created, there must be Italian soldiers under a UN mandate – not Nato, the European Union or the West in general, whom Russia would perceive as enemies,” Tajani told Mattino Cinque News.
“The solution would be to have a UN action, decided through the Security Council, with the commitment therefore also of China and Russia and to establish a buffer zone where there could also be Italian soldiers.”
As in Lebanon, the Italian peacekeepers would be part of a UN mission “not a Western one deployed against Russia,” Tajani said.
