(Adnkronos) – A European defence is now essential to reduce military dependence on the United States and for countries to spend more efficiently and avoid “too much duplication”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.
Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni is set to attend a summit in London this weekend that will look at European defence, Tajani told Mattino Cinque News.
“This has become indispensable. Europe, which is part of Nato, cannot think it will always be defended by the US alone. It must provide for itself. We must do more for our defence,” said Tajani.
Europe “spends its defence resources badly”, Tajani continued.
“There is too much duplication. We need to also have European bonds, that is to say a European fund for defence,” Tajani argued.
Polish premier Donald Tusk said on Thursday that a group of European leaders will head to London on Sunday to discuss joint plans on defence and security.
Tusk also said that the European Commission is preparing a defence package, details of which will be unveiled at the special summit of European Union leaders scheduled for March 6.
The EU extraordinary summit on 6 March will mull extra support for Ukraine, European security guarantees and how to fund Europe’s defence needs, according to European officials.
