(Adnkronos) – Ukraine’s entry into Nato can only be considered once the three-year-old war with Russia is brought to an end, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday.
“At the moment there is no prospect of Ukraine entering Nato – in any case the war (with Russia) has to end,” Tajani told reporters at the parliament in Rome.
“The US has put the issue on the table and we’ll see what happens when the war is over,” Tajani said.
NATO’s official position is that Kiev is on an ‘irreversible’ path to joining. But the Alliance operates on a unanimous voting system, meaning that the US can bar Ukraine from becoming a Nato member even if the other 31 member nations are in favour.
