(Adnkronos) – In his opening speech at the National Dialogue Conference in Damascus, the interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, called for the unity of Syria and the need to have a state “monopoly” on the control of weapons, defined “not a luxury but a duty and an obligation”. “Syria is indivisible, it is a whole and its strength lies in its unity,” said the leader of Hayat Tahrir al Sham whose advance last December brought down the regime of Bashar al Assad.
At the conference, convened at the presidential palace in Damascus as the beginning of the reconstruction phase of the country’s governance after the devastating civil war, al Sharaa also announced the creation of a Justice Commission. “In the last two months we have worked to prosecute those who have committed crimes against Syrians – he explained – we will work to form a transitional legal entity to restore rights, guarantee justice and, God willing, bring criminals to justice”.
