(Adnkronos) – As the first talks to give life to the new government begin, some Spd and Green politicians do not hide their irritation with the Cdu candidate chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who immediately after the vote changed his position on the issue of debt ceiling reform. After presenting himself in the election campaign as a staunch defender of the “debt brake” and ruling out any changes to the rules, the Cdu leader has opened up to reform, which could be done by the outgoing Parliament, in office until March 24.
The amendment “has been rejected time and again – stressed Rolf Mützenich, leader of the Spd group in the Bundestag, denouncing Merz’s attitude – I must say I am amazed at how quickly the wheel can suddenly be reinvented”.
The leader of the Greens group, Britta Hasselmann, also stressed that the vote of the outgoing Bundestag “is not a problem-free decision”, while co-group leader Katharina Droga recalled that the Cdu leader has repeatedly said no to any reform before Sunday’s election.
The debt ceiling rule, inserted into the German Constitution in 2009, provides for a maximum deficit-to-GDP ratio of 0.35%.
