(Adnkronos) – The 28-year-old American citizen arrested in recent days at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport on charges of ”drug trafficking” after cannabis gummy bears were found in his luggage has been released. The Kremlin made it known, stressing that his release comes with the aim of improving relations between the United States and Russia on the eve of talks scheduled in Saudi Arabia. ”Since talks will be held tomorrow on the restoration of relations” between Moscow and Washington, ”events like this fit into the context,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Kalob Wayne Byers’ imprisonment.

The Tass news agency explained that the American citizen risked 5 to 10 years in prison, in addition to a fine of up to 1 million rubles, the equivalent of $10,884, for drug trafficking.
