Iran, Foreign Office confirms arrest of 2 British citizens

13 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Two British citizens have been arrested in Iran. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed this, adding that “we are providing consular assistance” to the two and that the government is “in contact with the local authorities”.

Yesterday, Iranian state media reported that a British man and woman had been detained in the city of Kerman, in southeastern Iran, on security-related charges. The official Irna agency also published blurred images of the two meeting the British ambassador, but did not identify them. It is unclear when they were arrested.

The Foreign Office has warned that those traveling to Iran are at risk of “arrest, detention and sentencing to death”, stressing that Tehran does not recognize dual citizenship. Iran has in the past arrested several British citizens and held them for long periods of time. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori, both British and Iranian citizens, were released in March 2022 after years of imprisonment in the Islamic Republic.
