Germany, ten days to the vote, the government crisis in November

13 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Germany goes to the polls on 23 February to renew the Bundestag, the Federal Chamber. The vote was scheduled for 28 September next, 4 years after the previous one, but was brought forward to February following the political crisis that broke out in the country. The crisis culminated on 6 November last in the collapse of the three-party coalition government, the traffic light coalition (red of Scholz’s Spd, the yellow of the Liberals of the Fdp and the Green of the ecologist party), after Scholz sacked Finance Minister (Fdp) Christian Lindner and the liberal ministers left the coalition. On 16 December, the vote of confidence lost by Scholz with 394 votes against, 207 in favour and 116 abstentions paved the way for the early vote. The outgoing chancellor remained at the helm of a caretaker minority government.
