Egypt: Eni, AICS team up to boost youth job prospects

12 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Eni and the Italy’s overseas development agency AICS have inked an accord to improve technical education and employment for Egypt’s youth, Eni said in a statement on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to boost the quality of technical education in Egypt by addressing the labour market’s needs and fostering the green and digital transitions, building on the model of an applied technology school that Eni opened in Port Said, which had its first cohort of graduates in 2024, said the statement.

The scheme is part of Italy’s multi-billion euro Mattei Plan for Africa to propel the continent’s economic development through public-private partnerships in key sectors including energy, education and health.

Italy’s education minister Giuseppe Valditara and his Egyptian counterpart Mohamed Abdel Latif attended Wednesday’s signing of the MoU, which implements the ‘Energize ATS: Improving Technical Education and Job Prospects for Youth in Egypt’ programme.

Under the MoU, Eni and AICS will work together to establish two new applied technology schools, one in Matrouh Governorate and the other one in Damietta Governorate, the statement continued.

Eni, through Damietta LNG and its subsidiary IEOC will focus on the management of the schools, the development of the curricula, the accreditation of the programme, and the training of trainers, according to the statement.

Eni will cooperate with Egypt’s petroleum and mineral resources ministry on the project, which will be carried out within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the statement went on.

AICS will focus on the renovation of educational infrastructure and on the supply of equipment/furniture, as well as supporting the schools in increasing inclusiveness – especially for female students and students with disabilities – and will offer extracurricular Italian language courses.

Eni has been present in Egypt since 1954 and is currently the country’s leading producer with an equity production of approximately 280,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2024.
