(Adnkronos) – Where the Gulf of Mexico once was, today on Google Maps, there is the Gulf of America. At least for American users, who see the new name of the body of water as required by the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. Previously, Google had in fact explained that it had “the established practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources”. And therefore, a note reads, “people using Google Maps in the United States will see ‘Gulf of America’, while people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico’. Everyone else will see both names”.
Last month, Google also announced that it would change the name of the highest peak in the United States from Denali to Mount McKinley, following Trump’s executive order. Former President Barack Obama renamed the Alaskan mountain Denali in 2015, in recognition of the region’s native population. At the moment, however, the change has not yet been implemented on Google Maps.
