Migration, competitiveness, security focus of Meloni, Schallenberg talks

10 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni and Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg looked at ways of cementing “already excellent” ties during talks in Rome on Monday that centred on migration, competitiveness and security, Meloni’s office said in a statement.

“The meeting allowed an exchange of views on opportunities to strengthen already excellent bilateral relations, especially in the energy and defence industry sectors”, read the statement.

“The two leaders also had an in-depth discussion on the main issues on the international and European Union agenda, especially migration, competitiveness and security, also in view of upcoming European appointments,” the statement continued.

Schallenberg was sworn in as Austria’s caretaker chancellor on 10 January, replacing fellow conservative Karl Nehammer after he failed to form a centrist coalition without the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), which won parliamentary polls in September.
