(Adnkronos) – Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni held talks in Rome on Monday with Austria’s caretaker chancellor and foreign minister Alexander Schallenberg, according to a government statement.
Schallenberg was sworn in as interim chancellor on 10 January, replacing fellow conservative Karl Nehammer, who quit days earlier after he failed to form a centrist coalition without the far-right.
The far-right Freedom Party (FPO), which won Austria’s parliamentary election in September, has been tasked with leading fresh negotiations on a new government. FPO is currently in talks with the conservative Austrian People’s Party (OVP), to which Schallenberg belongs.
