(Adnkronos) – United States government ships will no longer have to pay transit fees in the Panama Canal, the State Department has announced. But the Panama Canal Authority denies it. “The Government of Panama has agreed to no longer apply fees for the transit through the Panama Canal of U.S. government vessels,” reads a post on X by the State Department. “This saves the U.S. government millions of dollars annually.”
But with a statement also released via X, “in reference to the news spread by the U.S. Department of State, the Panama Canal Authority, authorized to establish tolls and other charges for transit through the canal, communicates that it has not made any modifications.” And it reiterates its willingness to “initiate a dialogue with U.S. officials regarding the transit of warships from that country.”
