Mideast: ‘Impossible’ to recognise Palestine at present – Italy

6 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy backs a Palestinian state but cannot recognise one yet as “we don’t have Palestine”, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday after talks in Israel’s port city of Ashdod with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar.

“Italy’s position is very clear: we believe in two peoples, two states, but today it is impossible to recognize Palestine because we don’t have Palestine,” Tajani told reporters during a press conference with Saar.

“It’s time to work for the future, we have many ideas,” Tajani said.

Tajani was in Ashdod for a ceremony to mark the arrival there of a ship carrying 15 trucks which Italy is giving the UN World Food Programme and vital humanitarian supplies for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

During their talks, Tajani and Saar were set to look at the prospects for re-starting the stalled Israel-Palestinian peace process and Gaza’s post-war reconstruction.
