Philippines, House members approve motion to impeach the vice president

5 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The Philippine Parliament has voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte following allegations of alleged corruption. Duterte has been accused of misusing millions of dollars in public funds and threatening to have President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. assassinated, charges she denies.

A total of 215 out of 306 members of the House of Representatives voted in favor of impeachment, exceeding the threshold of one-third needed to approve the motion. The measure will now be considered by the 24-member Senate.

If found guilty, Duterte risks being removed from office, the first vice president in Philippine history to be impeached. She would also be permanently barred from holding public office. She is expected to remain in office until the Senate ruling, which will meet on a date to be determined.
