(Adnkronos) – “Guantanamo is a black mark on the honor of our nation, this massive expansion in the field of mass detention is morally indefensible raises significant concerns for civil liberties.” Thus the Democratic deputy, Jerry Nadler, condemns Donald Trump’s announcement for the creation of a mega migrant detention center in Guantanamo, recalling that he has “been asking for its closure for years, denouncing the abuses”.
Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib also called Trump’s plan “horrific”: “We cannot allow this level of dehumanization to be normalized, we must close Guantanamo once and for all.” Human rights groups also condemned Trump’s move, recalling that the president should not reuse it to transfer migrants but close “a place of torture, of indefinite detentions without charges, trial or guarantees”, as Amnesty International said.
For the American Civil Liberties Union it would be “a disastrous mistake” to decide to “send large numbers of migrants to the inaccessible military base in Cuna that would allow the government to deprive them of fundamental human rights, far from lawyers, the press and congressional scrutiny. Unfortunately – he concludes – it seems that this is precisely the objective”.
