(Adnkronos) – Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic has resigned after three months of street protests against corruption following the collapse of the roof of the Novi Sad station last November 1 in which 14 people died. ”My decision is irrevocable,” Vucevic said in a press conference, explaining that President Aleksandar Vucic ”accepted them after a long meeting this morning.” Announcing his decision to step aside, Vucevic condemned the divisions in Serbian society and criticized the protesters for increasing tensions after the Novi Sad incident.
Overnight, thousands of Serbs took to the streets of Belgrade to denounce corruption and demand justice for the victims of the Novi Sad station incident. In addition to being prime minister, Vucevic was mayor of Novi Sad from 2021 to 2022, when the renovation work on the railway station began.
