(Adnkronos) – Another four South African soldiers were killed in the raging armed clashes in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Yesterday, three soldiers died near Goma airport, where a base of the South African forces (SANDF) was hit by a grenade “launched by rebels” from the M23 armed group, and another soldier died after being wounded in other fighting in recent days, the SANDF confirmed in a statement this morning.

On Saturday, they had reported the deaths of nine soldiers, including two deployed as part of the UN mission MONUSCO, in clashes with M23 fighters, which Rwanda is accused of supporting. Sunday night, M23 men entered Goma. This morning, the DPA news agency points out, it is unclear who is in control of Goma.

“The SANDF remains committed to its peacekeeping responsibilities under the MONUSCO mission and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission,” the statement released by the South African forces reads.
