DR Congo: Italy tracking Goma riots, Kinshasha protests

28 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign ministry “is closely following” the unrest in eastern Congo’s largest city of Goma and protests in the capital, Kinshasha, after Rwandan-backed rebels marched into Goma on Monday.

“The foreign ministry is closely following the riots in Goma and protests in Kinshasa. Headquarters in contact with compatriots,” the ministry wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The tweet advised Italian citizens to contact the foreign ministry’s crisis unit or Italy’s embassy in Kinshasha and to check the ministry’s ‘safe travel’ section for updates.

At least 17 people are reported to have been killed and nearly 400 wounded in the fighting in Goma – a key trading and transport hub. It is the worst escalation of a long-running conflict between ethnic Tutsi-led rebels and government forces in mineral-rich DRC in over a decade.
