Moldova, 30 million from EU for Transnistria energy crisis

27 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The European Union will provide 30 million euros in aid as a “first step” to support the Republic of Moldova in addressing the serious energy crisis caused by the Russian giant Gazprom. The EU says it is ready to finance the purchase and transport of natural gas in the Transnistria region, to help restore electricity and heating for the over 350,000 inhabitants of the region until 10 February. The package can also allow the supply of electricity from one bank of the Dniester to the other.

In addition to facilitating the purchase and transport of gas in Transnistria, the EU is committed to providing a financial support package for Moldova in the coming weeks aimed at mitigating the social consequences of the crisis for Moldovan citizens.

For the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, “in the middle of winter, more than three hundred and fifty thousand residents in the Transnistria region are left in the dark and cold because Russia has decided to cut off gas supplies. Simply we cannot accept that people on our continent do not have access to the most basic services. But in difficult times you see true friends. That’s why today we are launching a lifeline: we will provide gas to the people of Transnistria and restore access to electricity and heating”.
