Germany: Greens ask for clarification from Merz, no to coalitions with Afd

24 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The German Greens are asking conservative leader Friedrich Merz for clarification on the conditions for forming a coalition government after the February 23 vote, in order to rule out any form of collaboration with Alternative for Germany. Speaking on public broadcaster Zdf, one of the party’s two leaders, Felix Banaszak, asked Merz to elaborate on the requirements he mentioned yesterday for forming a new executive around the theme of a stricter migration policy.

In response to Wednesday’s attack in the southern city of Aschaffenburg, attributed to an Afghan asylum seeker and which left two dead, Merz promised to increase the number of deportations and ‘de facto’ ban entry into the country to people without permits. Merz clarified that such measures will be essential for a coalition government under his leadership. “Compromises on these issues are no longer possible,” he added.

Commenting on Merz’s statements, the Green leader said such conditions cannot be imposed “with such insouciance”, as they do not do justice to the seriousness of the situation. He criticized Merz because on the one hand he defended the cordon sanitaire against the AfD, which prevents any collaboration with it, “and then said ‘I don’t care now, with what majorities'”.
