EU: von der Leyen, ‘energy plan for affordable prices in February’

22 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – “Energy prices in Europe are still structurally higher than those of the United States and China” and vary “very significantly within the EU itself. We need to lower them as we complete the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels”. This was stated by the President of the EU executive, Ursula von der Leyen, reiterating that a “plan” is being worked on to have energy “at affordable prices, which we will present in February”, in a speech during the plenary session of the European Parliament.

The EU can achieve its dual objective “by diversifying supplies, as we have done over the past two years, but also by investing in next-generation energy technologies, because this is Made in Europe technology. Let’s take the issue of fusion, for example, or advanced geothermal or solid-state batteries, just to name a few”.

For the President of the EU executive, echoing the conclusions of the European Council meeting of 19 December last, it is urgent to “mobilise more private capital to modernise the grid and infrastructure” and to “remove barriers to the energy union”, all elements that will be part of the plan.
