**EU: Kubilius, ‘Need defense spending at 5-6% of GDP’**

22 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – EU member states should allocate sums equal to “5-6%” of their respective Gross Domestic Products to defense in the coming years. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius, speaking at the annual conference of the European Defense Agency in Brussels.

“My country – says the former Lithuanian premier – Lithuania, plans to spend 5-6% of GDP on defense in the coming years. It is my country, so I might be a bit biased, but this is the kind of commitment we need. The good news is that we still have time to prevent an aggression by russia and a war in Europe”.

The current target for NATO countries is 2% of GDP, but not all allies meet it; Secretary General Mark Rutte has already said that this is a minimum, not a maximum target, and that the target will be increased.
