At the end of September, the Department of Commerce launched a public inquiry on the matter, which has just ended with the publication of new rules aimed at “securing the ‘smart’ vehicle supply chain from external threats.” “Today’s cars are not just steel on wheels, but also computers,” said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo of the rule, which also covers Russian technology. “This is a targeted approach to ensuring that Chinese and Russian manufacturing technologies are kept off American roads.”
