(Adnkronos) – Over 130 documents relating to the 13th-century ‘Book of Marvels of the World’ chronicling Venetian explorer Marco Polo’s travels in Asia between 1271 and 1295 are on display at an exhibition in Shanghai though 28 February.
The ‘Real and Imaginary Lands. China and Marco Polo: A Tale of Books’ exhibition showcases 131 documents which chart the history of the translation and dissemination the travelogue and includes manuscripts, books and digital content.
The exhibition forms part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death in 1324 and the 770th anniversary of his birth in 1254, and is open to the public at the Shanghai Library East, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Consul General of Italy in Shanghai, Tiziana D’Angelo, the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai, Francesco D’Arelli, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Shanghai Library, Yang Chunhua, and the Director General of the Shanghai Library, Chen Chao attended the exhibition’s opening last week.
The exhibition has been organised with the support of the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai, the Institute of the Enciclopedia Italiana-Treccani and Italy’s Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, and Biblioteca Riccardiana, according to the statement.
