8 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani will travel to Syria on Friday, where its path to democracy and freedom, and the “full rights” of minority Christians will be a focus of talks with top officials, he said.

“I will underline to the new Syrian authorities the importance of an inclusive political process that guarantees the fundamental freedoms of all Syrians and recognises and values the role of Christians as citizens with full rights,” Tajani said in parliament.

Tajani was addressing MPs during parliamentary question-time, where they are quizzing the minister on international and European Union initiatives to stabilise Syria and relaunch its economy in the wake of the 13-year civil war that toppled long-time dictator Bashad al-Assad last month.

The Middle East will be on the agenda at a meeting Tajani is hosting Thursday in Rome of ‘Quint’ foreign ministers, attended by his US, UK, German and French counterparts, and by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
