South Korea, rumors about Yoon’s escape, presidential office denies

8 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Rumors and denials follow one another in South Korea about the impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol, who at the beginning of December had tried to introduce martial law in the country, soon revoked. The presidential office denied rumors about Yoon’s alleged escape from his residence while authorities are trying to execute an arrest warrant against Yoon, impeached by Parliament and awaiting the Constitutional Court’s ruling after the impeachment voted by the chamber.

Informed sources told the South Korean agency Yonhap that Yoon is in his residence, where he would therefore remain barricaded. But the police continue to try to ascertain Yoon’s whereabouts amid rumors of a possible escape. The alarm was raised by the declarations of MP Ahn Gyu Back, from the Democratic Party, according to whom Yoon would have left the residence to go to “another place”.

Only yesterday a new arrest warrant was issued after the first one expired at midnight between Monday and Tuesday. For Yoon’s lawyers, the arrest warrants are “illegal and null”. They arrived after Yoon, accused of insurrection and abuse of power, did not appear to answer investigators’ questions about the events of 3 December.
