(Adnkronos) – Foreign minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday hailed journalist Cecilia Sala’s release by Iranian authorities, which he attributed to “diplomacy and teamwork”.
“Diplomacy and teamwork: Cecilia Sala is returning home!” Tajani wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after news that Sala had been freed from prison and was already aboard a flight home to Italy.
In a statement, premier Giorgia Meloni thanked “all those who contributed to making Cecilia’s return possible” and said she had personally called Sala’s parents to tell them of her release and imminent return to Italy.
Sala, 29, was arrested in Tehran on 19 December and detained in its notorious Evin Prison. She is a reporter for Il Foglio daily and hosts a podcast.
