(Adnkronos) – Italy’s office bearers celebrated the 228th anniversary of National Flag Day on Tuesday, paying tribute to the Tricolour as a powerful symbol of patriotism, freedom, democracy and national unity.
“Today we celebrate the 228th anniversary of the #Tricolour, symbol of our history and our identity,” foreign minister and deputy premier Antonio Tajani wrote on X.
“On the National Day dedicated to the #Tricolour we pay homage to those who every day, with pride, defend our values,” the tweet added.
Premier Giorgia Meloni hailed the Tricolour as a “symbol of a strong and united nation that is returning to assert itself in the world” and “a bridge that unites history and future, tradition and innovation, our roots with our tomorrow”.
“Love for the Homeland, memory and respect for those who fought for our freedom, hope for a future to build together…Let’s keeping carrying high our green, white and red flag. With pride, passion and determination,” read Meloni’s tweet.
Since its birth on 7 January, 1797, Italy’s flag “has encapsulated our national identity in a historical process that led to a unitary state, and with the Liberation (from Nazi-fascism) to the values of freedom and democracy, peace and cooperation,” president Mattarella wrote in a statement.
“These inalienable values of our society are embodied in our Constitution. The Tricolour evokes pride in our civic virtues and in being Italian, expressing the values of our community and country to the world,” the statement continued.
“Long live the Tricolour, long live the Republic, Mattarella concluded.
