France, commemorations for the 10th anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack begin

7 Gennaio 2025

(Adnkronos) – France today commemorates the jihadist attack carried out ten years ago against the Charlie Hebdo newspaper. The nation was hit in 2015 by a series of attacks, from the one on the famous satirical weekly to those against the Bataclan theater, the Parisian terraces and the Stade de France. Four days after the attack, on January 11, 2015, the demonstrations brought together almost 4 million people across France, with many heads of state and government taking part in the Parisian procession.

The commemorations today will be “as every year” marked by “sobriety, according to the wishes of the families”, the Paris municipality said. Mayor Anne Hidalgo “will pay tribute to the victims” in the presence of President Macron and several ministers. The commemorations will begin at 11:30 am in rue Nicolas-Appert, in the 11th arrondissement, where Charlie Hebdo was based in 2015. They will continue on Boulevard Richard Lenoir, where police officer Ahmed Merabet was killed by the fleeing terrorists.

The events will end at 1 p.m. with a tribute to the victims of the Hypercasher Porte de Vincennes store, where four people of the Jewish faith, taken hostage, were killed on January 9. Exactly ten years after the massacre that targeted its editorial staff, Charlie Hebdo published a special 32-page issue. On the front page it defines itself as “indestructible!”, with the drawing of a jovial reader sitting on an assault rifle, reading the newspaper.
